The Past Comes to Life in Grobiņa: Living History Festival «SEEBURG»

On May 31st, the Living History Festival “SEEBURG” will take place in Grobiņa, offering a diverse and exciting program for the whole family. Visitors will be able to take a journey through time, discovering the daily life, craftsmanship, jewelry, armor and clothing of the ancient Curonians and other Baltic tribes.

The festival’s main location will be on Skābaržkalns (Grobiņa Hillfort), where from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, an ancient settlement will come to life with over 15 different traditional craft workshops. Visitors will be able to observe and try ancient skills — pottery, woodworking, tablet weaving, wool and fabric processing, clothing and leather shoe making, tin casting, jewelry forging, and even try on historical clothing and armor. Children will be able to enjoy the ancient games tent, and food lovers will have the chance to taste historical dishes and refresh themselves with drinks.

Together with a herbal healer, visitors can participate in making a warrior's salve and take a glimpse into their fate by casting dice. Live folk music will add to the special atmosphere.

On the northern side of Skābaržkalns, visitors can watch ancient agility relays, where attendees are invited to test their strength in selected disciplines during breaks.

Two major tournaments will take place during the day:
2:00–4:30 PM: Historical archery competition “Seeburg Arrows” on the peninsula of the Ālande River, where archers will compete in several categories, including shooting from a floating boat. During breaks, anyone can try archery (for a fee).

2:00–5:00 PM: The thrilling Curonian longboat races at Grobiņa’s Mill Pond — attendees can watch local business, community, and parish teams row large boats, competing in strength and unity.

Awards for tournaments and races will be presented at 5:30 PM on Skābaržkalns. From 6:00 PM, the ancient settlement and ferry crossing will be closed.

At the same time, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the Latvian Tourism Information Market will take place at Dzērves Square, offering travel inspiration from all over Latvia. Visitors can learn about tourism offers, events, and attractions in Dienvidkurzeme, Kurzeme, and other regions of Latvia — all in one place!

To end the day, at 9:30 PM, at the foot of the Grobiņa hillfort and on the surrounding waters, a grand musical performance “Meeting of the Curonians” will take place.

In this special event, times and people will meet. Water, fire, air, and earth will come together. Through a synergy of light, sound, and movement, the stories of the Curonians — of raiding the Baltic Sea, battles, encounters, and ancient life — will come to life.

Director – Maija Kalniņa.
This will be a visually and emotionally powerful story that connects history with the present — suitable for both young and old.

Entry to the event area is free of charge.
