Last year, the marathon was held for the first time and received recognition and good reviews from participants. Therefore, this year, the interest of rowers is great, and the marathon is also included in international competition calendars.
One of its organizers, Ansis Dobelis, the head of Supfit.lv, explains the great interest in the marathon: “We are creating the event so that it is at the same time an unforgettable adventure in nature, a challenge to overcome oneself, as well as a competition. This allows the event to bring together participants with very different motivations. In addition, there is an opportunity to compete in the marathon in both the folk class and the sports class, as well as to form a team to row with friends or colleagues.”
Currently, more than a hundred participants from 8 countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands and Costa Rica – have already registered for the marathon and confirmed their participation. Considering the interest in the marathon, the organizers predict that this year as many as 300 or more paddlers could take part.
The uniqueness of the event is well described by one of the organizers, the head of the “Active Tourism Center Eži” Rolands Melbārdis: “Last year, I gained experience in the marathon not only as an organizer, but also as a participant. Therefore, I am confident that this will become a recognizable international event. Firstly, because there is no other river in Europe that flows so beautifully for exactly one hundred kilometers from a fabulous lake to the sea. Secondly, the river is magnificent and diverse, with a natural landscape and a steady flow of water. Thirdly, the organizing team are passionate SUP enthusiasts themselves, and the event was born directly from their own experience in Salaca.”
“SUP King Marathon – Salaca 100” will start early in the morning of May 3 in Vecate – the place where Salaca flows out of Lake Burtnieki. The rowing route will lead along the Salaca River to its mouth in the Baltic Sea. Participants will have to complete the 100 km distance within 24 hours. Participants can register for the marathon on the official website - www.salaca100marathon.lv.
Marathon participants will be provided with support throughout the event. Every 20–30 km along the river banks, there will be resting places provided by the organizers, where participants will be able to catch their breath, charge their phones, replenish their water supplies and receive other necessary help and support. Participants will also be provided with transportation between the start and finish points of the event, as well as the opportunity to withdraw during the distance if, for some reason, they are unable to complete the distance.
The event is organized by “Aktīvā tūrisma centrs Eži” and the SUP adventure organization “Supfit.lv”, and is supported by the municipalities of Valmiera and Limbaži.
