The Long Night of Museums at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre with the motto «Grey Covers Laid out by the Night»

On 18 May 2019, 7 p.m. through midnight, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will be open for the Long Night of Museums with a special programme "Grey Covers Laid out by the Night".

As part of the story of Latvian Centenary and by way of commemorating the Centenary of Latvian Freedom Fights, the thematic framework chosen for the Long Night of Museums 2019 is the fabled Trumpeter of Tālava from the epic ballad by Rūdolfs Blaumanis. Throughout history, heroes have fought with sword and spear as well as with word and brush. The strength and power of art tears down prejudice, stereotypes, walls and borders.

At Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, some of the most brilliant works by locally based and international artists will shine in the Long Night of Museums through a veil of darkness and mystery. Visitors will have an opportunity to relish dreams and reality at the group exhibition from the Funen Printmaking Workshop, to experience peace and tension in the art of Latgale region and to appreciate the expressive style of painter Maija Bērziņa in her latest solo exhibition.

For one night only, expressly for the Long Night of Museums, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will offer the photo exhibition "Solaris" by the popular Lithuanian media artist Remigijus Venckus. The exhibition was inspired by Polish philosopher Stanislaw Lem and his ideas expressed in the Sci-Fi novel "Solaris".

Two new projects are being prepared for the Long Night of Museums in cooperation with Daugavpils Secondary School of Design and Arts "Saules". The arts centre will demonstrate the first experimental videos of the school’s new vocational secondary education programme "Multimedia Design", created under the tutelage of programme director, artist Aija Bley. In addition, select works by students of photo design will be exhibited in a show curated by artist and teacher Aivars Bulis.

Another novelty at this year’s Long Night of Museums is cooperation with Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics. At 8 Hospitāļa Street, 7 p.m. through 10 p.m. an unprecedented exhibition "On Air" will afford an unusual glimpse into the latest trends in contemporary ceramics.

The Long Night of Museums at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics will be available free of charge. Meanwhile, the permanent exhibition "Mark Rothko. Life and Art" with original works by Mark Rothko will require an entrance fee.
