Results of the survey of Latvian residents about the domestic trips made in 2009

Compared to the previous year, the number of recreational trips made in 2009 has reduced by 4%, according to the survey on the domestic trips of Latvian population conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau. Their number comprised 15.6 mln*, of which 3.3 mln were recreational trips with overnight stays.

Reasons which prevented Latvian population from trips were financial conditions (56%), lack of time (13%), and lack of interest (8%). Other reasons were mentioned by 23% respondents.

Most popular destination of recreational trips with overnight stays was Riga region – 34% of all recreational trips with overnight stays. 19% of all recreational trips with overnight stays were made to Latgale, 17% - to Zemgale, 16% - to Vidzeme and 14% - to Kurzeme.

During the recreational trips travellers most often accommodated in private lodgings (at relatives and friends, in summer cottages, in rented houses and flats, etc.) – 88%, other travellers accommodated in hotels and other places of tourist accommodation.

In recreational trips with overnight stays travellers on average spent 2.2 visitor nights and during a trip they spent on average LVL 19.3, and it is LVL 2.7 less than in 2008. Such trips were made by slightly more women than men (53.7%). The majority of travellers (40.2%) were aged 25-44 years.

The number of business trips with overnight stays, in turn, comprised 255.6 thsd, and it is 21% less than in 2008. During such trips one traveller on average spent LVL 38.3. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 76.7%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.

*Starting with 2009 due to the changes in methodology recreational trips made within own administrative territory and outside it are counted (prior only those made outside of the administrative territory were counted).
