Experience winter in Jēkabpils

When the winter cold bites your cheeks and the snow blankets the ground, you must move to stay warm! Skiing, sled down a hill, hiking, or enjoying the beauty of winter in a horse-drawn sleigh - experience a winter fairytale and get active in Jēkabpils!

Jēkabpils Mežaparks is the place to be for winter fun! Sledding hills of various sizes, a 1.6-kilometer-long ski slope, ski rental, an all-season cross-country skiing track, and snow-covered forest trails for leisurely walks. The mountain hut, which is open Wednesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 19 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 19 p.m., rents out equipment. In the Radžu reservoir, a "seal" harbor has been created. Ice car track is also open. The track is completely free. Driving on studded tyres is prohibited, and caution is advised.

Open skating is available in the sports hall's ice arena. For skating times, please visit the Jēkabpils Sports Centre website at www.jekabpilssc.lv. Join the "Carnival on Ice" in your most colorful Christmas costume. The event will take place on the 23rd and 30th of December. The events will be held on both Fridays at 17.00 and 18.30. A family skating activity called "Morning on Skates" will take place on January 8, February 12, and March 12.

The "Society for the Protection of Natural Resources" invites you to go skiing at the campsite at Lake Baļotes in the municipality of Kūku on December 17, 18, and 25 from 11 a.m. to 15 p.m. A 1 km track is available for classic skiing. Everyone will be able to use free equipment. In the campfire, you'll be able to roast your own sausages. Bring a cup of tea prepared by the association. For more information, call 26866825.

Skiers are also welcome in Gārsene. A 6.5-kilometer circular ski slope is available. It begins at the Gārsene Culture House, which has parking, amenities, and a shop. The skiing path follows a newly created cycle track through Gārsene's nature trails, eventually leading to fields and forest stigmas. A joint skiing event will take place on the ski slope on December 18 at 12.00. Meet at 11.30 a.m. in front of the Gārsene Culture House. The trail's farthest point is the Sārasa hill, which provides a breathtaking view of the South valley. For more information, call 20034392.

In "Līčos," Krustpils parish, Jēkabpils municipality, home of the "Pet Society," you can ride on a larger horse-drawn sledge for a truly enjoyable ride! The ride lasts 40 minutes and is suitable for groups of up to five people. Call 26553868 for more information and an application.

What about a 20-kilometer winter hike on forest trails and roads? Join the Jēkabpils Sports Centre's hikes:
- On January 7, "On foot home from Kūkas" will transport you from Kūkass parish to Jēkabpils;
- "On foot home from Biržiem" will take you from Biržu parish to Jēkabpils on February 11.

Winter can also be experienced in Jēkabpils municipality's nature trails and parks, such as Laukezers Nature Park, Gārsene Nature Trails etc. Or, from the high lookout towers in Taborkalns, Ormaņkalns, and the Kristakrūga lookout tower near the Teiči bog, take in the winter landscapes.
