Tallinn Light Festival Will Brighten January Up

The capital of Estonia will be the seat of several cultural events in the framework of the Light Festival which will take place in Tallinn until 25 January 2009.
The festival opened with turning on the lights in the light sculptures designed by the main guest of the festival, Bernard Murigneux (France), which are attached to the walls of the Old Town, but change their location until 18 January by moving towards the sea. The common denominators of his project called Tandem are light, nature conservation and concentration on the future.

The students’ exhibition opening on the 14 January in ArtDepoo looks back at the students’ ventures during the previous light festivals. On the same day there will also be a light journey which begins with sunrise.

The inhabitants of Uus Maailm will also take part in the Light Festival and they will turn their quarter green in the framework of the light project The Street of Green Lanterns. The project will highlight the distinctive character of town space and will accentuate the need for greenness both in thinking and in public space.

In addition it is possible to take part in the events which have already become a tradition: burning fire sculptures, and light installations designed by the students of the Estonian Academy of Arts in Harju Street. This year the Light Festival will also be celebrated in nursery schools where children will make lanterns and auroras.

The Light Festival will close on 24 and 25 January with the grand celebration of the Chinese New Year with the party of fire and ice in Kadriorg.

The organisers note that the Light Festival will continue to take a more active role in organising art and culture projects in the town space during the darkest season of the year by aiming to harmonise the programme with the context of the European Capital of Culture 2011.
