airBaltic wants to buy a stake in Estonian Air

Latvian aviation company airBaltic says that it wants to have more direct flights from Tallinn and one of the possibilities for that is to buy a stake in Estonian Air
airBaltic’s corporate relations deputy president Janis Vanags told ETV’s Friday evening news that taking over the Estonian national carrier is being seriously considered. “The fact is that we haven’t launched talks yet but we are ready to do it in any form. Estonian Air has three owners and we are open to discuss that topic with any of them,” said Vanags.

Estonian Air belongs to SAS (49%), the Estonian state (34%) and investment bank Cresco (17%).

airBaltic has direct flight from Tallinn to Riga, Turku and Lappenrantaa. It intends to open routes from Tallinn to Tampere, Oulu and Vaasa and start flying to Sweden.

When buying Estonian Air, other conditions are more important than the price, said Vanags, not specifying what conditions he meant.

Since airBaltic has not contacted the Economy Ministry with a purchase wish, the ministry does not comment upon the topic.
