Charity campaign «School Bags for Ukrainian Children» launched

The new school year is fast approaching, and many children will start school or return to the classroom, including children in Ukraine, whose homeland has been ravaged by war for more than four years. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, countless schools have been forced to suspend operations and find new premises, while children study in basements, bomb shelters and other places in an effort to retain at least some sense of childhood and the opportunity to learn. To help them and bring them a little joy and hope before the new school year, SIXT franchise partner in Latvia, together with other organisations, is running the charity campaign “School Bags for Ukrainian Children”, which aims to raise funds to purchase 1,000 school bags, including school supplies.

This is the fourth year in which such a campaign has been organised. Last year, around 500 bags were sent to the Cherkasy region, and the children’s genuine joy and gratitude inspired the organisers to involve the wider public this year. Each bag is worth around EUR 35, and this year they are once again scheduled to be delivered to children from smaller rural areas in central Ukraine. This region has repeatedly been subjected to Russian missile and drone attacks because it is located in the centre of the country and has important infrastructure.

“We are now in the fifth year of the war, and many Ukrainian schoolchildren do not even know what it is like to study in peaceful conditions, with no bombs falling and no drones flying overhead. We do not have the power to stop the war or give these children back a normal, peaceful childhood, but together we can turn the run-up to the new school year into a celebration,” says Jānis Putniņš, SIXT car rental manager for the Baltics.

School bags are also a very practical gift — for many families, meeting everyday needs in wartime has become an enormous challenge, so there is often not enough money to buy school supplies. For children, a bag filled with school supplies means not only the opportunity to start the school year properly, but also the feeling that they have not been forgotten and that people in other countries support them.

At the end of August, the campaign organisers and volunteer helpers plan to travel to Ukraine to personally deliver the bags to the children. Donations to support Ukrainian schoolchildren can be made until 18 August using the bank details available HERE.

The organisers encourage people to get involved and not remain indifferent, reminding them that every donation matters! “Great things start with small steps, so every contribution to the campaign matters, even if it is only a few euros. We believe that together we will be able to bring joy to at least these 1,000 children,” adds J. Putniņš.

The charity campaign is organised by SIA Transporent, SIXT franchise partner in the Baltics and Finland, in cooperation with the Riga Jesus Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia. More information about the campaign is available HERE.
