For centuries, the Bārta River served as an important route for raftmen – skilled craftsmen whose work was not only physically demanding but deeply intertwined with nature. Until the mid-20th century, timber rafts were floated along the waters of the Bārta and Toseles rivers, transporting logs all the way to Liepāja. This ancient craft was carefully passed down through generations, and although rafting ceased in 1953, its presence still lingers in place names and living memory.
Since 2023, the spirit of rafting has returned to its historic channel – the Bārta raft once again glides along the river, becoming a living testimony to the past. With joy and excitement, we continue this tradition in 2025 – on May 3rd and 4th, Bārta will host the “Bārta Raftmen Festival 2025”, a celebration of ancient crafts, living cultural heritage, and Latvian values.

On May 3rd at 14:00, the festival will open with a ceremonial launch, a raftmen’s parade, and folk songs performed by ethnographic ensembles. Visitors will have the chance to witness the traditional raft-tying process, explore the crafts and local produce market, enjoy creative children’s activities, and in the evening, dance and sing along at the open-air party with the band “Luste.” One of the most anticipated events is the popular agility challenge – “Balancing on a Log”, where the bravest participants will try to stay upright on a floating log using a pole for balance.
A special highlight of this year’s festival will be the unveiling of a new raftman sculpture – a symbolic tribute to all those who once guided rafts along this river.
On May 4th, as we celebrate the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, the rafting journey will begin at 10:00 a.m. from the glamping “Bārtas krasts” site, accompanied by music and festive spirit. At the same time, a canoe trip will take place along the river to the Recreation base “Ods”, offering adventure-seekers a scenic 16 km journey. Canoe participants are invited to register by April 29.
The Bārta Raftmen Festival is more than just an event – it is a celebration of strength, history, and community. It honors our heritage while creating new memories and deepening our sense of belonging.
