May 17 in history: Ferry starts route from Ventspils to Saaremaa

The passenger ferry line, which connected the Latvian city Ventspils and the Estonian-owned island Saaremaa, started on 17 May 2005.

Back then, the route from Ventspils to Saaremaa Port Mõntu was active four summer seasons, with a total of around 60 000 passengers.

In 2008, at the start of the financial crisis, the line was closed.

Every now and then there are ideas about re-routing, but it hasn't happened yet.
