Daugavpils hosts an international painting symposium dedicated to Mark Rothko

From 12 to 25 September, as a homage to the world-renowned artist Mark Rothko, Daugavpils hosts the 16th international painting symposium “Mark Rothko”.

Despite the global developments associated with the Coronavirus pandemic, Daugavpils Mark Rothko art centre made its annual open call to artists from Latvia, the Baltic States and beyond to participate in a painting symposium dedicated to the celebrated artist Mark Rothko.

The invitation to spend a fortnight at work in Rothko’s hometown Daugavpils was accepted by seven artists – Vija Zariņa (Latvia), Kaspars Zariņš (Latvia), Nataļja Marinoha (Latvia), Uldis Čamans (Latvia), Romualdas Balinskas (Lithuania), Tomas Rudokas (Lithuania) un Rose-Mari Torpo (Finland).

Traditionally, the symposium programme features public presentations, lectures and master classes. Therefore, at 4 p.m. on 18 September the participants will give public presentations of their artist portfolios, introducing themselves and their creative pursuits.

The symposium will conclude on Mark Rothko’s birthday, 25 September, with the opening of an exhibition by its participants scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Admission to artist presentations and exhibition opening – free of charge.
