Discover Tartu countys food culture at the Inland Waters Festival

This year, Tartu county proudly holds the official title of Estonia’s Food Region. Our county lives and breathes to the rhythm of the Emajõgi River, stretching from Lake Võrtsjärv to Lake Peipus. Alongside its rich waterways, the region also boasts ancient farmlands, strong traditions, and a vibrant cultural landscape.

Many events in Tartu county reflect our deep love for local food and are closely tied to our culinary heritage. One of the biggest and most important of these is the Inland Waters Festival, which takes participants on a unique journey across Estonia’s largest inland bodies of water – Lake Võrtsjärv, the Emajõgi River, and Lake Peipus.

Taking place from 8 to 20 July, the festival offers not only a lively cultural programme but also a chance to enjoy local food culture right by the water.

At the harbours along Võrtsjärv, Emajõgi, and Peipus, you’ll discover delicious culinary experiences – from the fresh catch of local fishermen to the finest products from regional producers and true gems of traditional food heritage. Here in Tartu county, food culture has grown side by side with our waterways for centuries, with fish holding a place of honour both on the plate and in local life.

Many harbours offer fishing-related activities such as family fishing lessons, fish-cooking workshops, and fun-filled fishing competitions. And it’s not just about fish – you’ll also find a wide variety of other local delights: freshly baked goods, farm produce, seasonal vegetables, and more. Add to that live music, cultural performances, and the chance to buy local delicacies directly from the people who make them.

Discover all the harbour programmes and culinary experiences on the Inland Waters Festival website.
