Main events taking place in Latvia in 2015

This year promises to be just as exciting as the previous one, with a wide range of events taking place throughout the year, according to the 2015 event schedule released by the Latvian Tourism Development Agency (TAVA), in cooperation with the Riga Tourism Development Bureau.

The event guide is made up of various cultural and sporting events scheduled to take place in Latvia in 2015, as well as festivals and many other entertainment gatherings.

Even though Riga will no longer be the European Capital of Culture, the cultural program of events will be just as extensive as previous years, especially when speaking about musical events. Already in February, the premier of the Giacomo Puccini opera Manon Lescaut will be held at the Latvian National Opera (LNO). This will be followed by two more Puccini operas at the LNO in the spring, while the 2015 Riga Opera Festival will be devoted to the great Italian composer.

Various music events and festival of different genres and styles will also be taking place in 2015 – from classical to jazz and country music, all the way to mainstream music. Of course, one of the most anticipated events will be the annual Positivus music festival in the coastal town of Salacgrīva.

Cultural events will be also in Liepāja, Cēsis and many other towns and cities throughout the country. Furthermore, everyone is welcome to attend Latgale Potters Days in Rēzekne and the Dižmāra Fair in Talsi.

Exciting top-level sporting events will also be organized in Latvia in 2015, including the Luge World Championships in Sigulda, as well as a group stage of the 2015 European Men’s Basketball Championships in Riga.

Furthermore, persons will not only be able to watch sporting events, but also participate in them, like, for example, the Riga Marathon and the annual Strong Race at the Cinevilla cinema town.

The event calendar has also been created with support from the European Regional Development Fund.

Many of the events included on the event calendar have already become a tradition. A prime example is the annual Christmas Tree Festival, which always brings color into the daily lives of Riga residents and will most certainly do so again during the next holidays.

The event guide has been prepared in English, and is currently only available on-line on TAVA’s official web-site. In brochure itself will be printed in the near future and will be available at tourism information centers throughout the country.
