DFDS closure of route betweeen Germany and Latvia

DFDS’ route network in the Baltic Sea is to be focused eastbound on the ports in Klaipeda and St.Petersburg. As a consequence, and lossmaking operations, the ro-pax route between Lübeck and Riga will be closed with effect from 27 January 2010. The route’s capacity was scaled down in October 2008 from two ships to one ship.

The agency organisation in Lübeck and Riga is also adjusted with a reduction of seven positions. The ro-pax ship Kaunas will after closing of the route be deployed as a replacement vessel in connection with dockings.

The closing of the route is expected to generate some volume for DFDS’ other east- and westbound routes and a sales office with four employees is maintained in Riga. The number of departures between Klaipeda and Sassnitz was, moreover, increased from one to two weekly departures from the beginning of 2010.
