Exhibition of contemporary Estonian painting "Big Painting"

On Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 6 p.m. the exhibition "Big Painting" was opened in Evald Okas Museum in Haapsalu and now is available for every art lover in the world.

We are living in a post-studio era, when painting no longer inevitably means an auratic rectangular object completed slowly on an easel. Painting of new generation is more frequently born in temporary studios and exits from frames, becoming installative, covering ready-made items as decoration or expanding into urban space as a message.

The exhibition has been inspired by the children's book "Big Painting" (1971), which has raised the generation of innovators of the contemporary Estonian painting: Merike Estna, Kristi Kongi, Laura Põld, Mihkel Ilus, Mart Vainre, Marie Kõljalg etc.

The legendary children's book featuring the texts by Ellen Niit and illustrations by Edgar Valter was published at a time when artists were given official authority to contribute to the shaping of the society and in Estonia this chance of changing the grey and drab Soviet environment was happily taken by the emerging pop art generation. In this cult children's book, with which several generations have grown up, the human kind invites an artist to redesign the world.

The exhibition features Edgar Valter's original illustrations to "Big Painting", the bright colours of which never made it to the books at the time due to poor print quality, but have been preserved superbly in the watercolour originals.
The exhibition is curated by Liisa Kaljula, graphic design is by Helmi Arrak.
On August 4 at 4 p.m. the curator introduces the exhibitions to children, but grown-ups are welcome as well!

The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. The organisers would like to thank Kumu Art Museum, Tartu Art Museum, Estonian Art Museum, Estonian Children's Literature Centre, Raiko Jäärats, Kalmer Jäärats, Marelle Kalvik, Ahti Lill, Ats Nukki and Uve Untera.
The exhibition will remain open until August 31, 2016.
