Glamorous 1920's fashion on display in Kumu Art Museum

Kumu Art Museum opened an elegant exhibition on October 11, named “A Moveable Feast. Art Deco Fashion Design from Alexandre Vassiliev's Collection”.

Well-known in Europe, fashion historian, interior decorator and scenic designer Aleksandre Vassiliev's (1958) collection is displayed with an emphasis on the decade that followed World War I. The collection is comprised of over 80 costumes and more than 200 accessories, along with photographs and paintings that illustrate the development of European fashion during the inter-war period (1918-1925), when the predominate style was art déco.

The drastic changes in fashion were especially evident in dress lengths, which became gradually shorter throughout the period between years 1918-1925. Fashion was dominated by bold flapper dresses with low cuts, often decorated with beads and accessorised with elegant handbags and purses that went together with unconventional hats which often reminded soldiers' helmets, fans decorated with ostrich feathers, bakeliite powderboxes and glimmering cigarette holders.

Alexandre Vassiliev has published over 40 books in several languages about fashion history, he has produced documentary films and worked as a lecturer. His collection has previously been on display in Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Istanbul, Moscow, Riga, Vilnius and Kaunas.

The exhibition will remain open until January 18, 2015.
