The Latvian National Opera is opening the 2010/2011 season on September 9 with the annual award ceremony and concert presented by the company “Latvijas Gāze”, the opera’s main patron.
The opera’s programme for October will feature celebrations of the 120th anniversary of Latvian composer Jānis Mediņš and the debut of the ballet “A Midsummer's Night Dream” by Jurijs Vamošs.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky's “Eugene Onegin” by director Andrejs Žagars and guest conductor Mihail Tatarnikov will be premiered in December.
The second half of the 2010/201 season will see a new production of Gioachino Rossini’s opera "The Barber of Seville”, a solo concert by Kristīne Opolais, a new production of the ballet “The Lady of the Camellias”, and a production of Bruno Skulte’s opera “The Heiress of Vilkači”.
The new season will also feature well-known and loved operas, including Giuseppe Verdi’s “Aida” and Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot”. As usual, the season will be closed in June with the Rīga Opera Festival.
