Livonian Festival at Cesis and Araisi

Medieval songs, handicrafts and battle reenactments will once again take place at this year’s Livonian Festival in the romantic and historical city of Cesis and the nearby village of Araisi. Persons wishing to get a taste of life in medieval Latvia are encouraged to attend this year’s festival, which will take place from May 21 to 22.

On May 21 by Cesis Castle, which is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the Baltics, battle reenactments from the Livonian period will be taking place throughout the day. The most exciting battle on the day will take place on the castle’s bridge. On the other hand, persons attending the festival will also be able to try shooting a bow and arrow and even participate in some of the reenactments.

However, the authentic battle reenactments are just one part of the festival. A Livonian love song competition will also take place, as well as medieval cooking classes. Persons will also be able to learn how to make holy amulets for themselves.

The culmination of the festival will take place on May 22 in the village of Araisi, located just several kilometers from Cesis. Another battle reenactment will be held by the Araisi Museum Park, which consists of reconstructed buildings from the Stone and Bronze Ages, ancient Latgalian settlements from the 9th-11th centuries, as well as castle ruins from the Livonian period. Participating in this battle reenactment will be enthusiasts from all three Baltic countries.

A special festival market will also be open on these days, where persons can try first-hand making handicrafts from the medieval times under the watchful eye of professionals.
