The Riga City Archives are celebrating their 140th anniversary, and the Riga City Council Minutes 1603-1890 have been added to the Latvian National Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program. The Latvian National Archives has created a virtual tour and exhibition about the Riga City Archives, which can be found at http://www.archiv.org.lv/rigaspilsetasarhivs/index.php/virtuala-ture/.
The Riga City Archives is not just one of the city's oldest cultural institutions, but also one of the oldest archives in the Baltics. The City Archives has existed since the 13th century. It has evolved over time from being a City Hall document depository to a separate organization with a wide range of responsibilities. The collection of records accumulated over its operation is the oldest and most priceless component of Latvia's documentary heritage, offering a wealth of knowledge about the history of Riga, Latvia, and the Baltic region. The document collection from the Riga Archives now completes the holdings of the Latvian State Historical Archives at the Latvian National Archives.

The interactive exhibition details the oldest and priceless records in the City Archives' collection as well as the history of the institution from the 13th century until its closure in 1964. A virtual tour that lets you "walk through" the historic Riga City Archives building at Palasta iela 4, where records of Riga City Hall and its affiliated institutions from the 16th to the 20th centuries are stored, complements the exhibition.
The Latvian Society of Archivists and the Riga City Council have worked together to produce the virtual exhibition and tour.
