On October 6 and October 7, the Latvian Ornithological Society (LOB) and the Nature Conversation Agency invites everyone to the European Bird-Watching Days (EuroBirdWatch 2012). This will be the 18th time Latvia will participate in European Bird-Watching Days, with various events to be held around Latvia.
The goal of European Bird Watching Days is to urge people to spend a fun time outdoors watching and registering as many birds and bird species as possible. The event is also a great opportunity for bird lovers to gather and go out bird watching together.
European Bird Watching Days will take place in Latvia already for the 18th time. Last year, there were more than 650 people participating in 16 free of charge excursions and information about observations of 139,487 birds of 163 species was received. At the same time in Europe there were 37 countries participating with more than 50,000 participants, who registered observations of more than four million birds and 1,770 different bird species.
European Bird Watching Days events in Latvia will be take place in various areas throughout the country this year, including Ķemeri National Park, Kolkasrags, Pāpe, Adamova, by Lake Burtnieks and Lake Lubāns.
In order to go bird watching and obtain a good knowledge of the different species, you do not have to be an ornithologist. The most important thing is to have an interest in birds and a love of nature, as well as some good binoculars and a bird handbook.
Latvia itself has excellent infrastructure for bird watching, as special bird watching towers and platforms have been constructed throughout the country, to the joy or many bird enthusiasts.
