Rafting to the Rothko Center

The eastern Latvian city of Daugavpils and the Mark Rothko Art Center will offer visitors this year an unusual and exciting way to visit the city by offering special rafting trips up Latvia’s most iconic and mythical river – the Daugava.

The rafts themselves feature wooden tables, benches and chairs, as well as grilling areas, areas that are covered in case of rainy weather, and of course life-vests. Pre-order meals can also be arranged, as well as local guides who will be able to tell the story of the area. The rafting service is available from May 1 to October 1.

The ride itself takes about an hour, and can be arranged for both larger and smaller groups. The scenic raft trip will allow visitors to view the city and its historical anti-flood barriers (1830-1841).

The Marko Rothko Art Center is the only place in Eastern Europe where it is possible view original works of Mark Rothko – the preeminent artist of the XX century, a founder of Abstract Expressionism.

The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center is a multifunctional institution of contemporary art in the space of the Arsenal Building of the Daugavpils Fortress. Visitors will be able to view original Rothko works and reproductions, as well as a digital exposition on the artist’s biography and creativity. Furthermore, visitors will also be able to visit the Rothko Silent Room, video hall, cultural and historical expositions and temporary exhibitions of artists from Latvia, Europe and the world.

In order to organize a raft ride, as well as a meal and a guide, it is necessary to order this in advance. More information can be found on web-site of the Daugavpils Tourist Information Center - www.visitdaugavpils.lv/en.
