Chinese newspaper creates website about Latvia

A website with comprehensive information about Latvia has been created in cooperation with one of the largest Chinese newspapers - "China Daily".Latvian Tourism Development Agency (TAVA) representative Inta Briede explains that the new website contains information about Latvian traditions, culture, tourism and recreational opportunities, economic environment, business and investment potential.

The website - Global.chinadaily.com.cn/latvia - is in Chinese, created as a thematic addition to the newspaper's Internet portal with more than 30 million daily visitors.

To become familiar with Latvia and create an interesting website for the Chinese audience, five "China Daily" reporters visited Latvia in the middle of June. They interviewed several high-ranking officials, including Saeima Speaker Solvita Aboltina (Unity) and Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ojars Eriks Kalnins (Unity), met with the heads of "Latvijas Finieris" and "Laima", visited the Freeport of Riga, "Rietumu banka", the School of Business Administration "Turiba" and the Confucius Center at the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, said Briede. She said that the reporters also visited several towns and cities, including Riga, Liepaja, Bauska, Cesis and Sigulda, as well as met with representatives from the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and the Latvian National Opera. Also on their tour of Latvia, the reporters visited Rundāle Palace, Turaida Castle, and many other popular tourist destinations.

"At the moment, China is not one of our top priority countries in regard to attracting tourists, however, it is a huge and very perspective market, and the earlier we enter this market the better. Supporting this visit by Chinese journalists to Latvia, we have gained an on-line resource in the Chinese language, which was created by professionals who know how to present their materials," said TAVA director Armands Slokenbergs.

According to statistics, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Latvia has been gradually increasing. In 2011, approximately 3,000 Chinese tourists visited Latvia.

"China Daily" is one of the largest media groups in China, which was established over 30 years ago and currently has a global audience expanding through Asia, Europe and the United States. "China Daily" also features an extensive English edition of its reports. The media group’s web-sites are visited by over 30 million users each day.
