SiXT opens a self-service bicycle rental in Riga

One of the Europe’s leading car rental and leasing service providers SiXT in future will also provide a self- service bicycle rental in Riga. SiXT rent a bicycle will offer the residents of Riga and also the guests of the capital more than 130 bicycles available in 12 rental stations. Next year when Riga will become the European Capital of Culture, SiXT is planning to substantially enlarge the quantity of the bicycles and rental stations.

SiXT rent a bicycle will provide a public and easily available bicycle rental service to the local citizens, both private individuals and companies, as well as the foreign guests. In 2013 the bicycles will be available in 12 rental stations:

Pulkveža Brieža street/ Elizabetes street cross;

by the Kongresu nams, on Krišjāņa Valdemāra street;

by the shopping centre "Olimpia" on 5 Āzenes street;

Kalnciema street/ Slokas street cross;

by the pie Āgenskalns market,

"SiXT rent a bicycle is the most extensive bicycle rental network in Riga, which will be available to everyone and which represents a sharing bicycle rental or "city bike". By creating and developing this service, we want to emphasize the advantages of having a bicycle in the city – as it is both, a comfortable way to get around and the fastest form of transportation for short distances. Due to its comparatively small scale, Riga is ideal city for bicycle to become a superb alternative for public and private transportation. A choice to go around by bicycle is our support to the development of city environment and green thinking and besides the mentioned above, it is economically beneficial as the bicycle rental price will be LVL 0,70 for a 30 minute ride –the same price as the ticket at the public transportation driver", explains Arnis Jaudzems, SiXT General Manager in the Baltic States.

For the convenience of the cyclists, SiXT rent a bicycle has a new especially convenient registration system through a mobile application. It is also possible to register by calling +371 67 67 67 80 and on the internet www.sixt.lv/velo. Payments are made with the credit card. SiXT has also thought about the corporate clients who will have special terms and conditions and payment order. SiXT rent a bicycle has been established only based on the private capital.

"Riga cannot be imagined without the bicycles- everyone are cycling, big and small, to work or for pleasure. Riga City Council has done a lot to make travelling by bicycle comfortable and community friendly and we will continue to do it by developing the bicycle infrastructure in the capital. With the renewal of bicycle rental service I want to emphasize that Riga City Council congratulates this initiative and will provide the necessary support as this is an important condition to the modern city environment and status of Riga as a modern capital," emphasizes Vice Mayor of Riga Andris Ameriks.

In 2014 Riga will become a European Capital of Culture. Awaiting this significant event, SiXT rent a bicycle will have an addition of new bicycles and several rental stations both in Riga city centre and outside of it. It will be a present to the capital, so the residents and the tourists can get to know Riga by bicycle.
